CREATING CONTEMPORARY ANTIQUES

A MUST SEE…. FOR COOL, COLOURFUL, CUTTING EDGE, INTERIOR TEXTILES & DESIGN

Zara Siddiqui-Lester is the brains behind the colour union, an innovative company that produces bespoke textiles and furnishings and zany original art

Zara Siddiqui-Lester is founder and designer at The Colour Union.

Zara is an iconoclastic designer (one of the industries unsung heroes, Selvedge Magazine)

with an inexhaustible source of ideas. Her work is not just a style but an attitude to life and creativity. She is fascinated by the interplay of mixing colours and the visual impact her designs create. ‘The Colour Union’ is true to its name with Zara’s trade mark

uninhibited use of colour combinations and eclectic imagery. Colour has been proven to have positive effects on mood, energy and morale and Zara’s aim is that her zany work provides some colour therapy to her customers whilst adding humour and drama to soulless spaces. ‘Creating contemporary Antiques’ is the company ‘tag’!

“I want to mix the old fashion tradition of products lovingly hand-made with the ‘state of the art’ innovation of digital printing. My work is all about contradiction”

Zara has distilled a lifetime of experience and reflection into three definitive collections all demonstrating an expressive use of colour, type, space and bold pattern.

The Beta Fashion project was launched with the goal of creating unique and affordable clothing for fashion forward individuals. We have established a new model for the fashion design process – contemporary fashion created on an open platform in collaboration with designers from around the world. More than just a fashion label, we wanted to start a new design initiative that would change the way fashion is created and consumed.

It is our belief that fashion should be as exciting to create as it is to wear. We give a voice to emerging and established designers by offering them an opportunity to participate in our design projects. This platform is available for the entire Beta Fashion community to view, comment and help decide which designs will become reality. In doing so we break away from the physical restrictions of a traditional studio environment, opening up a world of possibilities for our fashion and those who contribute to its creation.

Our skilled design team has developed clean, sophisticated key pieces which utilise our growing collection of print to its full potential. We want to offer women exciting, forward, yet wearable fashion, available in limited editions. A good print speaks volumes and when produced to the highest standard can transform well-cut shapes into pieces of exceptional beauty. An item bought from Beta Fashion is a truly unique piece of designer fashion but at an affordable price, with the money being used to nurture an ever-growing talent pool.

EPISODE 12 DESIGN PART 2 from ralph pink on Vimeo.

 About:
This video is part 2 of 2 in the “Design Process” series.

Drugs:
The video explains in a rather unusually visual way, how I create an atmosphere and mindset that allows me to design creatively and fluidly. This video is my first attempt at creative filming, so be kind. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out quite like I imagined it would, but then I really don’t have much experience.

Design:
The second half of this video is a speeded up look at me designing. These designs focus on the ideas that have emerged in my work so far and are largely un-detailed concentrating on silhouette and balance, rather than detail. I have only displayed about 10 designs, considering it would take forever to show them all.

I hope you enjoy the video it took some time to produce, even though it is a bit shit!

John John Jesse is an illustrative painter from New York City‘s Lower East Side in the Juxtapozgonzo-pop vein. He often shows with artists like Esao Andrews. Jesse has cited Gustav Klimpt, Carravagio, Béla Iványi-Grünwald, and Mark Ryden as influences

He painted the girls he grew up with, citing the punk lifestyle of girls and drugs. Most of the people featured in his work are friends of his. They are generally nude or partially disrobed, in situations that are both fantastical and gritty. Jesse has, to date, two self declared series of renderings. The first consisting of black & white drawings he calls the “Baby Demonica” series and the second, full color paintings he calls the “Demonica Erotica” series.

Jesse also played bass in the New York Crust punk band Nausea and designed posters and album art for bands like Agnostic Front. He is a former guitar player for the band Morning Glory.
